Jewellery care

Gold plated jewellery lasts far longer with a few small habits. These are the ones that matter.

01

Last on, first off

Put jewellery on after perfume, moisturiser, hairspray and makeup, and take it off before you wash, swim or sleep. This single habit does more than anything else on this page.

02

Keep it dry

Water dulls plating and chlorine strips it. Remove pieces before a shower, the pool or the gym.

03

Wipe after wearing

A dry, soft cloth after each wear removes the oils and sweat that break plating down. No cleaning solution, no toothpaste, no ultrasonic cleaner.

04

Store pieces separately

Use the pouch each order ships with. Jewellery stored loose in one box scratches itself.

05

Mind the pearls

Pearls are porous. Never soak them, and wipe them with a slightly damp cloth rather than any cleaner.

06

Rotate what you wear

A piece worn every single day wears faster than the same piece worn three days a week. Rotating two favourites keeps both looking newer for longer.

Cleaning, step by step

  1. Wipe the piece with a dry, soft cloth — a lens cloth works well.
  2. For a stubborn mark, breathe on the surface and wipe again. Skip soap, alcohol and jewellery dips: they are made for solid metal, not plating.
  3. Let the piece sit for a minute before putting it back in its pouch, so no moisture is trapped.

What plating wear looks like

Plating usually thins first where a piece rubs — the underside of a ring band, the back of a clasp. That is normal wear rather than a fault, and how quickly it happens depends on how the piece is worn and stored.

Travelling with jewellery

Keep pieces in separate pouches rather than loose in a bag, and close every clasp before packing — an open chain in a bag ends up knotted around whatever it can reach.
